The Big Sioux Recreation Area has provided recreation opportunities primarily to those in the Sioux Falls and Brandon areas of South Dakota. Campers, canoers, hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, archers, disc golfers, bird watchers, and nature lovers all have a place at the Recreation Area. Many species of wildlife and plants make their home there. It is the home of one of the state's oldest trees and the Big Sioux River runs through it.
Located just to the west of Brandon, the Recreation Area is a major outdoor resource for that and surrounding communities. Seven miles of trails through river bottoms, meadows, hills and forests offer a wide variety of natural environments.
The Game, Fish and Parks Department has an opportunity to expand the Recreation Area to the north, just west of existing housing developments. The additional land would increase the area's acreage and the trail system by about 20%. This resource will take on additional importance as Brandon and the Sioux Falls metropolitan area grow.
Although GFP funds will cover the majority of the land purchase, an additional $100,000 must be raised in late 2010. Contributions can be made to the Foundation at the contact information on the left side of this page.
