About the Foundation

The South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation is a separate, nongovernmental, nonprofit, public charitable 501(c) (3) support organization for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks (GFP)

Our Story

Since our founding in 1985, we’ve worked with donors to develop and enhance wildlife habitat, parks and recreation activities alongside the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. Whether you’ve spent a day at the nostalgic Adam’s Homestead and Nature Preserve or stood in awe at the Bison Center in Custer State Park, you’ve experienced the power of donor-funded transformation. What was once just a vision is now an engaging, educational experience that connects visitors to the majesty of South Dakota’s great places.

When a donor contributes to the South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation, their dollar begins a full-circle journey that directly enhances outdoor recreation in the state. First, the Foundation works with South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks to identify high-impact projects that align with donor intent and park system needs. Once projects are selected, the Foundation gets busy raising donor dollars needed while Game, Fish & Parks secures the necessary supplies, services, and expertise to plan and carry out the work. After the project is completed or as milestones are met, the Foundation fulfills its commitment by paying for the approved costs, ensuring that every donor dollar is used efficiently and transparently to bring meaningful improvements to parks, wildlife habitats, and public access areas across South Dakota.

“Our Foundation brings together visionary leaders who love our parks and wildlife, and who are passionate about expanding and improving public access to beautiful outdoor spaces and experiences.”
Dennis Daugaard, South Dakota Governor
“The Foundation is a crucial facilitator of initiatives and projects that preserve our natural heritage and the ways people can enjoy and appreciate the beauty and wonder of our state.”
Mark Wetmore, Spirit Mound Historic Prairie Board of Directors
“They leave a legacy of stories built around the beautiful natural landscape that continues to remain as a living memory example of history and nature.”
Fred and Sherry Thurston, Rapid City
